Personal Time Management is Important Too

By Pamela Dodd

When many people hear the words time management, they immediately think of getting organized at work. But it's equally important to focus on your personal time management, what you want to get out of life when you aren't working.

Here are five areas to consider:

Friends - All of us can easily get caught up in work and forget about our friends, but we really should keep in touch regularly with the people who matter most to us. Friends provide us with laughter and understanding, buffering us from life's stresses and sharing in our joys and sorrows. On a weekly basis, call up a friend and chat. Better yet, do something together. When you get out of your own head, life seems to go much smoother.

Family - Many of us take our families for granted, thinking they'll always be there when we need them, even if we don't talk to them very often. But it's important for them to hear what they mean to us from time to time. Give your brother or sister a call to see how they're doing. Call your mother to learn about her world, even if you're grown and have a busy life of your own. Most importantly, plan regular time with you're family. Usually they're the ones who know and appreciate you the best, for who you are regardless of anything else.

Diet - What you eat is another important personal aspect of time management. Perhaps nutrition is a better name for this, since the word "diet" for many people means depriving themselves of food in order to lose weight. Are you eating nutritious food or do you tend to grab snacks and fast food when you're always on the go? Nutrition research has shown that it's better to eat four or five smaller meals a day than 3 big ones. Yes, this takes planning. But you'll be amazed at the difference it makes in your health and weight.

Exercise - Most of us are way too sedentary, sitting with our noses buried in computers, cell phones, video games, and TV for hours on end. But our bodies crave movement. Some people find it easy to exercise regularly, while others jump on and off the exercise bandwagon. If you want to feel and look better and lower your chances of getting a chronic illness, put yourself on a weekly exercise schedule and enlist a buddy to keep you motivated. Walk, jog, swim, row, ride a bike, do yoga, or play a sport. The options are endless. Just do what you like to do. Only stick with it. Your life really does depend on it.

Fun - Do you have a social life? If not, you really need to get one. Life is too short to focus on just work. Fun adds some interest and spice and gives you a break from your usual routine. Call up a friend and go to lunch or to a movie. Play sports, take vacations together, join a book club. Find new ways to meet friends if you don't have any. Stretch yourself. When you do what you like with others, you feel grounded and more alive. Your daily and weekly stresses ease a bit.

If your personal life feels a bit down, follow these personal time management tips to spruce yourself up. You deserve feeling and looking well, with plenty of support and love from the people you enjoy the most.
